Hi everyone! :hola:

How is it going? Is anybody reading it, too? I have read exactly 50% of the novel, I'm on chapter 19 :) .

I think it's really good, so well written! I love the atmosphere, it's like being in an American Film Noir movie :D . I can't stop seeing Humphrey Bogart, and I also hear his deep voice telling me the story, reading aloud those parts written in the first person.

However, I find the story a bit hard to follow, quite a lot of different characters and the plot starts getting a bit fuzzy  . I had to go back a couple of times in order to remember who some characters were. But that happens to me as well when I watch a Film Noir movie, so I guess it's just part of the game  .

I think the atmosphere and the characters are more important than the plot itself.

Some sentences are really masterful:

"Neither of the two people in the room paid any attention to the way I came in, although only one of them was dead"

"His glass eye shone brightly up at me and was by far the most lifelike thing about him".

"I been shaking two nickels together for a month, trying to get them to mate."

Hi, Happy! :D

I don't know if I would call it an easy read, there are quite a lot of characters, and the plot is a bit confusing. Besides, the characters don't talk that openly about their motives or about whatever they want to get from the others  . I had to check some character or another already a couple of times, because I didn't remember who they were or what they had to do with the story  .

And then they use all these slang words  . I have checked quite a lot of them in the dictionary.

By the way, about the plot: I didn't understand what you said  .
Which widow? What is Florian?

I am still enjoying it a lot, it's really like diving into a Bogart movie :D . And Carmen is of course Lauren Bacall 8)

Well, this is embarassing... It so happened that I didn't check and I was reading Farewell, My Lovely (another of Marlowe's books) instead of The Big Sleep
I have already bought The Big Sleep in Amazon and tonight I will start reading it
Murke, thank you very much for having noticed my mistake :60:

I finished it today :D . I'm amazed at Chandler's narrative style. The film noir atmosphere is awesome, no wonder, since it's practically its founder

What I liked least was the plot. it's quite confusing, as I said, and it's not as surprising as other more modern detective novels. But still, I give the book five stars just for the atmosphere, the characters and the narrative style. Some sentences are just perfect. And the prose gets even poetic from time to time. Fantastic.

Murke, how fast! :o

I am at Chapter XXI (53%). I agree with you about the prose (fantastic) and the confusing plot. There are a lot of characters and I was lost sometimes:
we had the cops, Owen, Joe Brody, Eddie Mars, Grieger, the Sternwoods and the people connected to all of them...
What I don't like about the plot is
that in spite of having several deads, we know the culprits of most of them. And right now it appears that the only thing missing are the whereabouts of Rusty Regan :meditando:
About the women, both sisters are very interesting characters.
