Nacido en Londres en 1923, John Mortimer fue hijo de un abogado que, a pesar de quedarse ciego, siguió vistiendo la toga durante años.
Estudió leyes en Oxford y se convirtió en uno de los más grandes defensores de la libertad de expresión, entre cuyos clientes figuraban la actriz porno Linda Lovelace y el grupo punk The Sex Pistols.
En 1975, la creación del carismático personaje de Horace Rumpole, basado en la figura de su padre, le consagró como uno de los más corrosivos escritores de su tiempo.
Llevó a la pequeña pantalla Retorno a Brideshead, de Evelyn Waugh. Aficionado a la buena vida, «un socialista del champán», se casó en primeras y breves nupcias con la novelista Penelope Mortimer, que hizo de su tormentoso matrimonio el tema de la magnífica El devorador de calabazas. Padre de ocho hijos, infatigable enemigo de Margaret Thatcher, es autor de las célebres Rapstone Chronicles, formadas por Un paraíso inalcanzable (1985), El regreso de Titmuss (1990), y The Sound of Trumpets (1998).
John Mortimer recibió en 1997 el título de sir a instancias del Gobierno de Blair, un político a quien apoyó fervientemente y llegó a odiar.
Murió en 2009 en su casa de The Chilterns, después de una larga enfermedad.
