André Aciman nació en Alejandría y vivío en la adolescencia en Italia. Más tarde se trasladó a Estados Unidos donde ha desarrollado su carrera literaria. Ha sido profesor de Literatura Comparada y Literatura Creativa en el Bard College y en las universidades de Princeton y de Nueva York, en esta última dirigió en el Writers’ Institut. Ha sido coordinador del The Proust Project (2004).
Aunque su lengua madre fue el francés, en su casa se hablaba italiano, griego, ladino y árabe.
Ha sido profesor de Literatura Creativa en la Universidad de Nueva York, de literatura francesa en la Universidad de Princenton y profesor visitante (Visiting Distinguished Writer) en la Universidad de Wesleyan. Actualmente, es profesor en el Graduate Center de la universidad neoyorkina. Especialista en la obra de Marcel Proust, coordinó y editó de "The Proust Project" y "Letters of
